Synopsis:
A gripping novel about the depth of a sister's love; poised to be the next book you won't be able to stop talking about.

A missing girl on a journey of revenge and a Serial-like podcast following the clues she's left behind.

Sadie hasn't had an easy life. Growing up on her own, she's been raising her sister Mattie in an isolated small town, trying her best to provide a normal life and keep their heads above water.

But when Mattie is found dead, Sadie's entire world crumbles. After a somewhat botched police investigation, Sadie is determined to bring her sister's killer to justice and hits the road following a few meager clues to find him.

When West McCray—a radio personality working on a segment about small, forgotten towns in America—overhears Sadie's story at a local gas station, he becomes obsessed with finding the missing girl. He starts his own podcast as he tracks Sadie's journey, trying to figure out what happened, hoping to find her before it's too late.

Courtney Summers has written the breakout book of her career. Sadie is propulsive and harrowing and will keep you riveted until the last page

Do you, like me, often wonder what a punch to the gut feels like?

If you want to know, then I suggest you read this devastatingly stunning book; because reading this feels like a freaking punch to the gut. I am at loss for words after reading this. All I want to do after reading this is to rage about the unfairness of the world I've witnessed in this book. My heart felt like it had been wrenched out of my chest and now I am left bleeding on the floor. This book is the epitome of heartbreak and grief for me.

Sadie is a story of a 19 year old girl driven by the purpose of finding and getting revenge that her younger sister deserves after being brutally murdered. Sadie, our titular character, raised her younger sister Mattie after their drug-addicted mother left them to fend for themselves. Since then, Sadie stood as the mother figure for Mattie; doing everything in her power to make ends meet for the two of them. But the world turned upside down for Sadie when Mattie went missing, and found later on brutally murdered. Driven by grief and a hunch on who might be responsible for her sister's murder, Sadie went on a hunt to get retribution for her sister's tragic death.

This book is told in two perspectives: Sadie's perspective as she embarks on a hunt for her sister's murderer, and West McCray's perspective through the podcast called The Girls; a podcast following the trail of Sadie's case. The alternation of perspectives in this book and how everything is interwoven all together somehow contributes to the punch this book has. The shift in perspectives somehow allow the readers to feel what the characters are feeling as well as delve deeper into their motivations throughout the book.

What I love the most about this book is how misleading (in a good way) it is. From the cover, you'll think this is a light read; but the text in the cover and the synopsis suggests otherwise. The synopsis of this book also leads you to believe that this book is solely about revenge, but the thing is, it's not entirely about revenge. Yes, the whole story revolves around Sadie's hunt for her sister's murderer, but the thing that is prevalent throughout the book is Sadie's unconditional love for Mattie. Sadie lost everything and went through a lot of awful things during her childhood. Mattie is her only anchor that keeps her from drifting away to nothingness. Mattie is Sadie's everything. The pain Sadie must've felt when Mattie ran away and later found brutally murdered is beyond imaginable. Her love for her sister is so great that it became her motivation to hunt down the person who murdered her sister and seek retribution.

The whole story doesn't just revolve around Sadie's hunt for her sister's murderer, it also revolves around issues that are prevalent and relevant in the real world. This book talks and opens discussions about child abuse, sexual abuse, pedophilia, and substance abuse; which happens in real life to real people.

Overall, this book is heartbreaking as it is stunning. This book deserves to be known and read by everyone with a heartbeat. It may not be an easy pill to swallow, but it's time for us to open our eyes to the harsh realities that needs to be talked about.
