Synopsis:
There’s no such thing as safe in a city at war, a city overrun with monsters. In this dark urban fantasy from author Victoria Schwaba young woman and a young man must choose whether to become heroes or villains—and friends or enemies—with the future of their home at stake. The first of two books.

Kate Harker and August Flynn are the heirs to a divided city—a city where the violence has begun to breed actual monsters. All Kate wants is to be as ruthless as her father, who lets the monsters roam free and makes the humans pay for his protection. All August wants is to be human, as good-hearted as his own father, to play a bigger role in protecting the innocent—but he’s one of the monsters. One who can steal a soul with a simple strain of music. When the chance arises to keep an eye on Kate, who’s just been kicked out of her sixth boarding school and returned home, August jumps at it. But Kate discovers August’s secret, and after a failed assassination attempt the pair must flee for their lives.

I finished this book in only one sitting. One. Sitting.

I usually finish reading books within 2 or 3 sitting, depending on my mood because, I have to admit, I have the attention span of a freaking gold fish. So, finishing this book in one sitting is a record for me. This book is just so unputdownable that the moment I read the first chapter, it's like there's a magnet pulling me in to read more and more and more and more.

This book is set in Verity; a city divided by two warring families, and torn to its core by the monsters spawned by the atrocities committed by humanity. The Northern part of the city belongs to Callum Harker who forces the citizens of the northern part of Verity to pay in exchange for protection from his army of Malchai monsters. While the southern side of the city belongs to Henry Flynn who leads a special force to keep the monsters at bay with the help of the rare Sunai which he treats as his own family. Kate is Callum Harker's daughter who recently just returned to V-City to study in Colton Academy, where she meets August Flynn; an undiscovered Sunai trying to fit in and be human.

I don't want to talk and explain what this book is about because I tend to spoil the whole premise of a story once I get carried away, so I'll leave you to read it for yourself what the book is all about. But trust me when I say this, you will not regret the decision to read it. This book is violently and devastatingly beautiful; from the world building, from the characters, from the writing itself, everything is utter perfection.

One of the main reasons why I fell in love with this book is because of the characters. Personally, I like it when the books focus is on the characters and their emotions, and this book has exactly that. The characters in this book are so well developed, add to that the subtle shift in perspective in which you can see the contrast between the two main characters. I also love the characters' development throughout the book that honestly pulled a lot of emotions from me. The characters in this book made me feel, something I find a really important aspect in the foundation of a strong character. It's one thing to see through the eyes of the characters in a book, it's another thing entirely to feel their emotions.

Overall, this book has been one hell of a ride for me. Everything about this book screams perfection; from the characters, the world building, the writing style, the story itself- this book is entirely addicting. So, if you're a fan of fast-paced, action pack books with an array of great characters; this one is for you.

Way to break my heart, Victoria Schwab. Really, I'm okay.

Have you ever read a book that messed up your feelings so bad that after reading it every fiber of your being just stopped functioning? This book did that to me. I thought I was prepared to delve into this book after re-reading the first book, but boy, I was wrong. Nothing could have prepared me for this.

Our Dark Duet is basically set six months after the events that transpired in  This Savage Song. Kate and August have gone their separate ways; Kate ran away to another city called Prosperity to hunt monsters, while August replaced his father as the leader of the special task force in charge of protecting Verity from the monsters infecting it. But when a new breed of monster emerges, Kate and August lives became entangled yet again to fight the monster as well as the tyrant rule of her and her father's own monsters, Sloan and Alice.

I don't want to delve much into the story so as to avoid spoiling anything, but all I can say is, this book is so much better than its predecessor. Don't get me wrong, I really love This Savage Song, but this book is another element entirely. It's beautiful yet heartbreaking to read. I literally bawled my eyes out reading this. I honestly don't know how to go on with my life now that this duology has finally reached its end.

All I can say is, beware of this book. Take all the preparation that you need, but I'm telling you, no preparation will ever get you ready for this.

P.S: Can we all agree on the fact that Satan is a woman and her name is Victoria Schwab?
